Frequently asked questions

Timing

Buffers and booking

How much time should I leave between two connections?

Between separate operators on the same day, allow at least two to three hours. Between a ferry and an international flight, stay overnight near the airport. Separate tickets rarely protect you if one leg runs late, so the buffer is your safety net.

Should I book everything in advance?

Book scarce legs early: sleeper berths, cross-border trains such as those on the Lao–China Railway, and famous scenic services like Kandy–Ella reserved seats. Keep the rest flexible so you can extend a stay you are enjoying.

How many countries can I fit into three weeks?

Two or three is comfortable for most overland routes. Every extra country adds a border day. Strong connections and time in fewer places usually create a richer trip than a longer list.

Transport

Rail and water

Is a rail pass worth buying for Asia?

Only after you compare it with point-to-point fares for your real route. Japan's national pass rose sharply in price in 2023, and regional passes or single tickets are now often better value. Prices may change again.

Are fast boats safe?

Standards vary between operators. Choose established companies, look for visible life jackets and a safety briefing, and avoid late-afternoon sailings in rough seasons. If conditions look poor, the slower public ferry is often the sensible choice.

Borders and money

Papers, fees and cash

Can I cross land borders without a visa arranged in advance?

That depends on your nationality and the specific crossing. Many countries have moved to e-visas, and requirements can differ between airports and land posts. Some land crossings have also closed at short notice. Confirm with official government sources close to your travel date.

What currency should I carry at borders?

A small amount of the next country's currency, plus clean, undamaged US dollar notes where these are commonly accepted for visa fees. Know the official fee in advance so you can recognise unofficial charges.
